Big houses are back in vogue, and bigger than ever.
The average size of a new home constructed in the U.S. last year was almost 2,600 square feet – 2,598 square feet to be exact – according to the Census Bureau. That’s a higher square footage than even during the housing market’s healthiest days, and beats the previous high of 2,521 square feet in 2008.
What’s in a house that large? According to the data, 44 percent of homes completed last year had at least four bedrooms and 33 percent had three of more bathrooms. One in five new homes included garages that held at least three cars.
A decade ago, only 20 percent of homes contained more than 3,000 square feet. Last year, 29 percent did.
The extra space comes with a higher price tag. Nationally, the average price of a new single-family home sold last year was $324,500, compared with $292,200 in 2012.
